William Goodwin was born in Hartford, Connecticut, the son of Rev. Francis Goodwin and Mary Alsop Jackson Goodwin. He attended Saint Paul's School in New Hampshire, Trinity College, and graduated from Yale in 1888. He worked for the Aetna Insurance company for 40 years as a sepcial agent in Ohio, Seattle, and San Francisco.
